Truckers, Protect These 5 Aspects of your Life!

Lussier Dale Parizeau | December 15, 2021
Are you a trucker? Thank you! You have an incredible impact on the economy.

Being a truck driver is a great job and, as a bonus, it offers great job security and financial stability. Most importantly, your services have never been more in demand: the many retirements and the explosion of online shopping have propelled the demand.

But it’s not all good news – being a truck driver also comes with its own set of challenges. Here are some ways to help you take care of 5 important areas of your life.

1. Your Physical Health

Did you know that truck drivers are more likely to develop chronic diseases and health problems than other adult workers? Heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity affect you more because of long periods of sitting and lifestyle. How can you limit your risk?

Prepare your meals as often as possible and avoid snacking on the road. Remember to add plenty of vegetables and cut back on soft drinks! Also, stretch when you can during your commute.

2. Your Mental Health

Too many truckers suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as a result of a car accident. The non-profit organization PTSD Among Truck Drivers allows you to talk to specialized psychoeducators at no cost. Don’t hesitate: they are there for you!

3. Your Family

Balancing life as a truck driver and family life is difficult, but not impossible. When you’re out there, get as many tasks done as possible. Take the time to be physically and mentally present with your family, giving them your full attention. Above all, don’t succumb to the temptation to compensate for your absence with excessive gifts: just make sure you give your best when you are present.

4. Drivers

You are no doubt familiar with the rules of the road. As a simple reminder, make sure you maintain a minimum distance of 7 seconds from the vehicle in front of you, and more if road conditions are poor. Avoid distractions as much as possible by putting away your cell phone and programming your GPS ahead of time. And don’t forget to wear your sunglasses so you won’t be too dazzled while driving!

5. Your Truck

If you own a heavy truck weighing more than 4,500 kilograms, the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) requires that mechanical maintenance be performed every 6 months by you or by a heavy truck maintenance center of your choice. A mechanical inspection must be performed at least once a year by an authorized mechanic in a SAAQ-approved inspection center.

The protection of your truck does not stop there. If you wish to be financially covered in case of accident, theft of merchandise, vandalism or other unfortunate events beyond your control, make an appointment with a broker at Lussier Dale Parizeau. Travel the roads of Canada and the United States with complete peace of mind!
